Andrew includes GPS features to help you know exactly how far you are from your target. Here's how to use them.
GPS yardages
When you're playing a round, Andrew shows distances to key points on each hole:
- Front of green: Distance to the front edge
- Center of green: Distance to the middle (pin position varies)
- Back of green: Distance to the back edge
- Hazards: Distance to bunkers, water, and other hazards
- Layup points: Strategic landing areas
Distances update in real-time as you move around the course.
Viewing the course map
During a round:
- Tap on the hole display or map icon
- The satellite/aerial view opens
- See the entire hole layout from above
- Your position is marked on the map
Map features
Satellite imagery
High-resolution aerial photos of the course showing fairways, greens, bunkers, and hazards.
Your location
A marker shows where you are on the course (requires location permission).
Distance lines
Lines from your position to the green showing exact yardage.
Hole features
Color-coded overlays for:
- Green (putting surface)
- Fairway
- Bunkers (sand)
- Water hazards
- Out of bounds
Setting approach markers
Plan your shots by setting target points:
- Open the course map
- Tap where you want to land
- See the distance from your current position
- Use this for layups or approach planning
GPS accuracy
For best results:
Enable location services
- Go to phone Settings → Privacy → Location Services
- Find Andrew
- Select "While Using the App"
Wait for lock
GPS may take a moment to pinpoint your location, especially at the start of a round.
Stay outdoors
GPS works best in open areas. Coverage may be limited under thick tree cover or near buildings.
Expected accuracy
Modern phone GPS is typically accurate to within 3-10 yards, which is sufficient for club selection.
Hole information
Beyond GPS, Andrew shows helpful hole data:
- Par: The expected score for the hole
- Handicap: The hole's difficulty ranking (1 = hardest)
- Yardage: Total length from your tee box
- Elevation: Whether the hole plays uphill or downhill (on supported courses)
Elevation diagrams
Some courses include elevation data:
- See the hole profile from tee to green
- Understand uphill and downhill sections
- Factor elevation into club selection
Note: Elevation data isn't available for all courses.
Offline maps
Course maps require an internet connection to load. If you'll be in an area with poor coverage:
- Open each hole's map while you have signal
- Maps may cache for short-term use
- Full offline mode isn't currently supported
Tips for using GPS effectively
Trust it for distance, not wind
GPS gives you yardage but can't account for wind, elevation changes, or course conditions. Use your judgment.
Check before each shot
Your position updates as you move. Check the current distance before selecting a club.
Use the map for strategy
Before hitting, look at the map to understand hazard locations and safe landing zones.
Battery consideration
GPS uses battery. If playing 18 holes, consider bringing a portable charger.
